Basic Principles Pilates incorporates the STOTT PILATES® Method in all of our Pilates classes. We have provided a brief overview of the STOTT PILATES® Method for you below but our recommendation is for you to speak directly with Alaine Owen, owner of Basic Principles Pilates, to discover more about our studio and classes.
As you consider adding Pilates classes to your exercise regimen, keep in mind that a combination of formats is beneficial. In addition, both group and private instruction is available to help you get the most from your dedication to Pilates at Basic Principles Pilates.
STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent over two decades refining the STOTT PILATES® method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES® training and certification programs. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities and everyone in between.
What is the difference between the STOTT PILATES Method and other Pilates techniques?
STOTT PILATES® incorporates modern exercise principles, including contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement. For example, some approaches may promote a flat back, whereas STOTT PILATES® exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints, placing more emphasis on scapular stabilization. As well, there are more preparatory exercises and modifications to cater to many different body types and abilities, making it applicable to everyday life.
What are the benefits of STOTT PILATES®?

Matwork, the foundation of STOTT PILATES® exercise, builds knowledge and strength from the ground up. Our instructors work through an exercise repertoire that challenges strength and flexibility to create a strong and healthy body. Layered with modifications suitable for novice and advanced exercisers, this workout also illustrates the Five Basic Principles – the core elements of the STOTT PILATES® method.
STOTT PILATES® Reformers utilize spring resistance to help tone, strengthen arms, legs and focus on torso stability. A maximum of four participants will find their time on the Reformer both challenging and invigorating.
The multi-functional STOTT PILATES® Split-Pedal Stability Chair is ideal for those who need to stay in a seated or upright position, the Stability Chair helps rebalance muscles and provides a full-body workout. It also facilitates high-performance exercises for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, as well as rehab clients.
While Stability Chair workouts typically focus on the legs and torso, this multi-function Pilates machine can also be adjusted to train almost all muscle groups. This sturdy piece of equipment helps the exerciser achieve upper- and lower-body strength and conditioning, enhance stability and improve body control. The smaller base of support and dual pedals allow for bilateral, unilateral and reciprocal movements to increase intensity and overall balance.
We always ATTEMPT to satisfy the needs of our clients. If there is a time or a type of class not currently available, please let us know. We will do our best to meet your needs.
